Am I dreaming?

The dead filled my dreams for as long as I cared to remember; their warnings whispered in my ears, revealing those whose time will soon come for them to no longer walk among the living but to join their ancestors on the other side. The knowledge is my blessing and my curse, trailing its way into my heart and mind for a me to finally choose. Occasionally, I make the right decision. Saving a life is confirmation of my purpose. However, it is the nights when the knowledge comes too late, when death’s hand lays openly on the table, and the dealer’s blackjack stares back at me that I question my role in this game. Am I King? Queen? Or but a pawn, the messenger of the Universe to be not trusted, nor ignored.
